The original, A Boy and his dog, Five people you meet in heaven, An Honest Man

I read too much to put all my thoughts of each individual book into different posts. So I’m combining the last four books that I read into one post. Read on!

The Original (Sci-fi Thriller)

In The Original (I downloaded the audiobook), a sci-fi thriller by Hugo Award-winning authors Brandon Sanderson and Mary Robinette Kowal, the story unfolds in a future where injectable nanites offer a tailored life experience at the cost of personal privacy. Holly Winseed awakens with a new identity and a mission to eliminate her Original self to avenge her husband’s murder, navigating a world of government surveillance and identity manipulation. Equipped with combat and deduction enhancements, Holly confronts terrorists and uncovers truths about her identity and her husband, culminating in a confrontation that leaves one version of her standing, fundamentally altering her perception of life.

I’m giving this book 4 stars. I really enjoyed the narration and the story. It’s nothing overly special, but a fun listen for a few hours on a run. Plus, it’s by two authors I really enjoy reading.

A boy and his dog at the end of the world (Dystopian Thriller)

In A Boy And His Dog At The End Of The World by C.A. Fletcher, follows Griz, growing up isolated with only family and dogs for company. He faces a turning point when a thief steals his beloved dog. In a lawless world, Griz embarks on a quest for justice, driven by loyalty and love for the things that matter most.

I’m giving this book 3.5 stars. The ending is a twist that I didn’t see coming (for obvious reasons, which I won’t get into in case you haven’t read it). Griz is a good main character, often running headfirst into everything without thinking. The pace of the book is quite slow, otherwise I might have given it a better rating. The plot also repeats itself a bit with Griz getting into trouble and finding someone with mercy; rinse and repeat. Still a fun read and a solid ending.

Five People you Meet in heaven (Literary Fiction)

In The Five People You Meet in Heaven by Mitch Albom, we follow Eddie, an uninspired war veteran who dies saving a child and discovers an afterlife where five individuals explain his life’s significance, unraveling the mysteries of his existence and the deeper meaning behind life’s pivotal question: “Why was I here?”

I’m giving this book 4 stars. It’s a fast book with a really interesting outlook on the afterlife and our reason for being on this earth. I don’t usually read literary fiction, but this one was worth it.

An Honest Man (Suspense Thriller)

In An Honest Man written by Michael Koryta, we follow Israel Pike, already notorious on Salvation Point Island for a past crime, becomes a prime suspect after finding seven men, including political rivals, murdered on a yacht. Concurrently, young Lyman Rankin encounters a mysterious, threatening woman while fleeing his abusive home. Their stories intertwine during the investigation, revealing twisted island secrets, showcasing Koryta’s prowess in weaving suspense and deep character exploration.

I’m giving this book 4.2 stars. Well crafted plot, interesting characters and a fun story to follow.
