Last week I set a weekly known record of 8638 words in the week for my new book Date of Death (Dystopian Thriller)! If you aren’t familiar with that project, you can read my monthly blog posts to get updated. My goal has always been writing 1000 words a day for 6 days a week and it’s often difficult due to distractions and other obligations.
Finding the time can be challenging for me and staying focused in that time can be equally challenging. I can’t count the number of times I was trying to write, only to have the dogs do something to completely distract me (side note, I board dogs and teach fitness classes and personal training, and it’s often just me and the dogs).
How did I Write more than 1000 words a day last week?
This is what worked for me. Maybe one of these points can work for you.
1. I cut out the distractions that I could. Even those that I had considered downtime in previous weeks (watching a movie). If I wasn’t teaching fitness or taking care of dogs, I was working on my writing projects (note: writing is a fraction of what I try to accomplish in a day in my author career. I also read books, edit, outline for new books, etc.).
2. I re-ordered my priorities because I have too much to do to accomplish most days (my habit tracker has over 6 hours of daily goals, which doesn’t include teaching fitness or walking dogs). Taking some time to put the most important things at the top of the list and sitting down to a timer helped.
3. It was okay to miss a day or have a low productivity day. I tried to hit the next day’s goals and then go back and make up the time. This is the one step that might not be realistic to do regularly.
Keep in mind I don’t anticipate hitting these types of numbers weekly. My goal while I’m this busy with business is still 6000 words a week. But having a big week is a nice boost.
